You completely described how I am feeling this week about politics and individuals seeking power. The push for better candidates is critical and we need a pipeline of competent, great people.
🙏 I wish we also figure out a way to have back ups to back ups. A network of good people who support each other stepping forward and working collaboratively on good governance. Because everyone has a time or place they need to be more present for family, etc. We saw it in the Mayoral in LA when Austin Beutner dropped out later given the tragic death of his daughter, he would have been a wonderful leader but then after his heart and soul died he knew he needed time to grieve. It became a bit of a last minute dance to figure out who else could run. Time and place is different for everyone. And it seems we’re very beholden to finding one good leader at a time, hoping they’ll keep serving, versus creating the network that thrives longterm.
Just read it; love that you also point out that assault and harassment doesn’t just happen to women. I thought that’s part of what was flawed in the aftermath of me too. If men and women call out abuse together (that happens to men and women as I wrote in my Cesar Chavez piece; as a result of an imbalance of power) the result will be stronger. 🙏

Great essay. this whole thing just makes politics feel exhausting. like you want to care but then it’s always this. 😔
I just subscribed to you. I just published something on the topic too.
Would love to know your thoughts.
