I loved every word of this article. I got done reading Litt’s new book last week and was disappointed at how condescending he was throughout the book. He barely tolerates his brother-in-law and treats him like a moral inferior.
I’m gay. I come from a conservative part of the country. Plenty of family members won’t support my choice to marry a man. But I don’t just love my family members, I like them. Like you said, why is this so hard?
What also bothers me is the brother-in-law isn’t event a Trump supporter. He doesn’t even vote! David took a year of surfing to find a way to enjoy his “live and let live” libertarian-ish brother in law who isn’t super ideological.
I’m very impressed you read the whole book. I decided I had seen enough. But that is indeed amazing that he got a book deal to describe how he learned to live with a libertarian. 😂 And through surfing… I grew up in the Midwest so I guess it was never a book for me… 🙏
Sounds like you should write a book about your Herculean ability to get along with your Trump family members! I have a feeling I would enjoy your book more.
Hey, Johanna…great article. I would LOVE to hear you and Litt have a discussion about this. Might also be fun to have a pair of Republicans on with you…one like you and one like Litt. What do you think?
Biden’s downfall was not dissimilar to what you are suggesting. He honestly felt that once he beat Trump the “fever would break” and people would come to their senses and realize we’re all Americans and essentially want the same things. Sorry, those days are over. You’re never going to have Chris Matthew’s fantasy of the good old where The Gipper and Tip supped together and met in the middle. Right-wing media have poisoned the minds of millions of Americans. They’re never going to come back no matter how nicely we talk with them and respect them. I wish that weren’t true, but it is.
Let me guess, you’re the one who wrote Michelle’s line “when they go low, we go high”? How’d that work out for us? As President Hillary if staying above the fray and not getting her hands dirty was the right choice. You know why there is so much negative advertising? Because it works. Trump is a sociopath with no integrity or ethics, but he’s damned good at tearing people down. Is that a good thing for society? Not at all. Then again, going high and losing isn’t helping us much right now, is it?
Pretty sure when we went high we won states like Indiana. And it was more than just go high, it was showing actual respect. Clinton’s team was quite different. There was an arrogance that Trump took advantage of. It doesn’t help that sexism played into it. And then an old man didn’t step aside for an open primary as he should have. We’ve done this to ourselves. It’s time for a new generation, and one that shows respect instead of disdain for our fellow Americans.

I like that. I'd talk to anyone. We have to. It's not always easy, some people truly believe the worst in each other, but necessary.
I still believe your first suggestion was the most eloquent “It's not that hard. Just don't be an asshole.”
